Why We Decided to Build the Ultimate Non-Toxic Bassinet (From Scratch)

If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you know that when it comes to non-toxic, safe nursery products, we never compromise. So when a reputable UK-based bassinet brand reached out to us about becoming their primary US retailer ahead of their state-side launch, we were thrilled.

They sent over a sample, and at first glance, it checked a lot of boxes. But as soon as we dove into the material specs, we hit a major dealbreaker: the mattress contained toxic flame-retardant (FR) chemicals.

If you know me, you know that’s an absolute line in the sand. I refuse to carry anything on our site that relies on harsh chemical treatments or off-gassing materials, so my answer was an immediate no.

From a Failed Partnership to a Lightbulb Moment

Determined to find a solution, we proposed a workaround: what if we manufactured a custom, 100% organic, FR-free mattress specifically for their frame so we could safely offer it to our community?

After weeks of back-and-forth, the company completely ghosted us. My guess? They realized that selling a truly non-toxic version exclusively through us would highlight the fact that their standard product was full of toxic additives.

Beyond being frustrated about the wasted time, that experience opened my eyes to a huge gap in the market: there simply weren’t options out there that were simultaneously gorgeous, multi-functional, and truly non-toxic without compromise.

So I thought: Why not just design one ourselves?

Designing an Heirloom-Quality Piece

We set out to create a piece of furniture that wasn't just safe, but so versatile and well-made that its utility would far outlast the newborn phase—all while keeping the price point as accessible as possible for growing families.

To bring this vision to life, we partnered with a veteran furniture designer and engineer with a background at Stickley Furniture, a brand world-renowned for legacy craftsmanship and structural integrity.

After months of sketching, refining, and testing early prototypes, we are finally finalizing the engineering and preparing for our very first production run. (And yes, I’m personally testing it out with our own newborn to make sure every single feature delivers in real life!)
